In 1986 Duccio planted more than 1000 olive trees, improving and completing the number of the ancient olive groves of the two farms already prospering on a surface of more than 16 hectares (39 acres), with the idea of developing the production of naturally biological produced extra virgin olive oil. The typical varieties of fruits include those such as frantoio (correggiolo), leccino, moraiolo and pendolino, which are hand picked when not yet completely ripe and immediately cold-pressed.
Then in 1998, the all important meeting with the world known consulting enologist Dr. Carlo Ferrini and the inevitable “ rediscovery” of wine making at the farms: inevitable not only because of the close proximity to several famous places such as Montalcino, Montepulciano and the hills of Chianti Classico, but also because wine of good quality had already been produced in important quantities until 1960s in two ancient farm cellars, one middle-aged and located deeply underground.
Tradition…passion…destiny…the “vineyard project” started in 2000 when Duccio planted the first vines and, these days, “Fattoria La Selva” boasts a plantation of a solid 11 hectares (27 acres), all strategically positioned in the brilliant sun of Tuscany, 350 meters a. s. l.. all selected for the right composition of the soil, exposure and characterized by the uniquely local conditions of a dry and windy micro-climate which prevents fogs and morning mists and cuts down on the number of treatments necessary for the grape vines and eliminates the need to treat the olive groves altogether .
Selection of blends, high density of plants per hectare, very limited quantities, rigour of tradition and the use of modern technology have all come together to produce the 2005 vintage consisting of two delectable wines IGT (indicazione geografica tipica): “Villa Boscarello” and “L’arco”. |
